Expro’s Mega Spider generates time savings for major operator in Guyana while reducing Red Zone entries

• A major operator in Guyana was seeking a solution that could run entire strings from casing to landing string with one tool. By achieving this, the operator could save time and reduce Red Zone entries by removing the need to change equipment

• The 11 7/8 in. 500/750-Ton Mega Spider along with Expro’s fleet of extended range tools were selected to run the strings. The Mega Spider is a combination casing and drill pipe spider with ability to run casing sizes from 11 7/8 in. to 6 5/8 in. drill pipe without the need to change equipment. The Mega Spider also has a high slip crush capability which allows it to efficiently run landing strings

• The Mega Spider and extended range tools were successful in running the different size strings without swapping spiders during casing operations, generating time and cost savings by eliminating this time-consuming step. The largest savings came when working with a tie back string with casing sizes 9 5/8 in. x 10 3/4 in. with a 6 5/8 in. landing string. The Mega Spider was able to run the different pipe sizes without the need to change equipment, eliminating twopotential tool swaps
• By removing the need to change equipment, a potentially dangerous activity due to the size and weight of equipment on the rig floor, the Mega Spider also reduced the potential for injuries and the number of Red Zone entries
• In additional success during the operation was the integration of the Mega Spider into the driller’s controls. This allowed the driller to control the spider during landing string operations which further eliminated personnel from the rig floor during landing string operations
• Ability to switch from running casing to landing string without swapping any components, to considerably reduce rig time
• Equipped with Expro’s proprietary Spider/Elevator Interlock System, which prevents the elevator or spider from opening until the complementary tool is correctly set on pipe
• While dressed for 6 5/8 in. drill pipe, the EXTENDED RANGE™ capabilities enable running up to 11 7/8 in. casing or drill pipe strings without slip changes or tool adjustments
• Unique split bushing design allows for easy insertion and removal
