Alf approached the senior team with a project he was looking to undertake for his part-time technical degree in mechatronics. In consultation with Expro, Alf developed the concept of a fully automated, three-phase well test system model – a project that would really test his abilities in designing and manufacturing such a system.

He said: “The innovation in the design was the small machined components made from Perspex that required engineering drawings provided to the machine shops for quotation plus integrating the automated parts into such a model.

“The model has been used at key trade shows – at ONS 2014 it was used on the Expro stand for twice daily presentations engaging with guests, clients and future customers. I supported the team by overseeing the sessions and monitoring the model’s operations.”

Gary Sims, Area Manager – UK & Scandinavia, comments: “Alf’s attention to detail and ingenuity was seen from the early stages of the project and his leadership qualities also shone through – it was clear his dedication to the project would ensure its success. It should also be noted that this project was undertaken in spare time with many evenings and weekends spent working on the model.

“The model not only provided a complex and challenging project for Alf’s thesis, but gives Expro a great model for trade shows and staff training recreating the well test system used offshore in the workshop.”

The working model was completed in June 2014, when the technical school sent representatives to evaluate the project. Alf and the team secured ‘A’ grades, finishing the project under budget utilising management, engineering and cost-tracking skills.

Alf was recognised with an Expro Excel Award for his work on the project.
