International Women in Engineering Day 2024 - Alice Low

24th June 2024

Name: Alice Low
Location: Dyce, Aberdeen
Job Title: Engineer

Tell us about your background?
Studied 5 years for my Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Aberdeen. After graduating I got a job in a small analysis company based out in Oyne in Aberdeenshire, which I had previously worked in during a summer placement. I was there for 8.5 years until I moved to Expro.

What does your job involve?
My current role is within the Global Riser Analysis (GRA) team which is part the project delivery team within subsea engineering. In my role we analyse the Expro landing string designs created by the project delivery team, checking their design feasibility of the systems for offshore based on engineering standards.

What advice would you give yourself at the start of your career?
Don’t stress if you don’t know everything, everyone has to start somewhere and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What’s been your biggest career challenge so far?
Coming into such a male dominated role can be challenging, but it has benefits at times it’s definitely a more chilled environment to work in and all the guys I’ve worked with have always been so friendly and supportive.

What would you say to someone considering a career in engineering?
Do it, it’s not as scary as it might seem.

What do you do outside of work?
I’m quite active and spend a lot of spare time at the gym and Judo (currently on my orange belt), I also have a wee dog and spend a lot of time out and about exploring on our walks. I like to balance this out with eating all my cakes I like to bake. I’ve also been involved in steam engines since I was a baby through my dad.
