Problem
An operator working in offshore Malaysia encountered loss zones during recent drilling operations in an 8-1/2” hole with a 9-5/8” parent casing, which required an extension of effective casing shoe. This presented challenges for drilling further sections of the well with optimized bit, casing and completion designs.
Solution & Achievements
A 7-5/8” Reline DL was deployed to provide an expandable liner from the 9-5/8” casing exit and into the under-reamed open hole. The liner was cemented, successfully isolating the loss zone. The large post-expansion ID allowed the operator to drill the 7-1/2” section, optimizing the casing design of the well.
The ReLine DL is an expandable liner system designed to isolate downhole intervals whilst providing an improved inner diameter (ID), resulting in optimized casing configurations and maximized production.
349ft of 7-5/8” expandable liner was successfully installed, reaching depths of more than 9,000ft, expanded and pressure tested to 850 psi before successfully drilling out the liner shoe within 4 hours, and continuing to drill ahead for the 7 1/2 section. This resulted in a post-expansion ID of 7.636”.
