Problem
A major operator based in Qatar recently required intervention when the bottom hole assembly (BHA) became lost-in-hole in a challenging horizontal well.
After drilling to TD, the BHA got mechanically stuck whilst pulling out hole and the client’s efforts to dislodge it were unsuccessful. As a result, the rig moved into non-productive status.
Solution And Achievement
Prior to Coretrax activation, the client had attempted jarring operations and acid pumping to free the stuck BHA, which were both ineffective. Additionally, the well had inclinations up to 75o which posed further challenges.
Coretrax’s Float Sub, DAV MX Circ Sub and HyPR HoleSaver technologies were deployed in the string as part of the customer’s wider risk assessment in case of a stuck pipe incident. The solutions can remain dormant in the string whilst still providing a contingency option if needed. These were selected as the most efficient and economical route to disconnect from the stuck BHA, if that event occurred.
Utilising the HyPR HoleSaver, the team were able to successfully sever the stuck pipe and the BHA above the severance point was successfully recovered to surface.
The client was able to resume drilling operations by sidetracking an 8 1/2” section, with zero equipment mobilisation required. This represents a significant cost saving and up to five days rig time saving for the operator, whilst also eliminating the requirement for mechanical cutting tools or explosives to be mobilized to the rig.
