Problem
In February 2024, whilst supporting a major operator in Qatar, their bottom hole assembly (BHA) became mechanically stuck while pulling out hole after drilling to TD. While attempting to jar free, one of the connections backed off leaving the string stuck in hole.
Solution And Achievement
The customer prepared a fishing BHA to attempt to recover the stuck string. The Coretrax DAV MX Circ Sub & HyPR Holesaver were incorporated in the string to give contingency in the event they became stuck. Following unsuccessful efforts, the drilling BHA and fishing string could not be freed, and the customer opted to disconnect the fishing BHA from the rest of the string
Given the total depth of the horizontal well was more than 21,900 feet, with an incline of 87o, jarring was not a viable option, adding further complexity.
The Coretrax HyPR Holesaver, a hydraulic pipe recovery system, was activated allowing a cut to be undertaken. By severing the drill string using the HyPR Holesaver, the BHA was separated, with the assembly above the HyPR Holesaver recovered. The HyPR Holesaver was run in conjunction with the DAV MX Circ Sub to ensure adequate circulation could be achieved to effectively sever the string.
The solution successfully saved the operator approximately five days of rig time, in addition to more than $200,000 in operational costs if the client had to deploy a mechanical solution. Unlike conventional offerings, the HyPR also does not require the use of explosives to resolve stuck pipe incidents, reducing safety concerns throughout the project.
